The company was part of the Canopy Group, but became independent in , after the settlement of a lawsuit between the Noorda family and a chairman of the group, Ralph Yarro, also former CEO of the Canopy Group. As part of the settlement, Canopy transferred all of its shares to Yarro. Later on, Caldera International changed its name to "SCO" and then to "The SCO Group" to reflect that change in focus.
